When Warframe was originally released for the PC back in 2013, players required a fairly powerful gaming PC in order to run it. Today, the game has aged very well and doesn’t require you to pay an arm and a leg for a high-end rig.
In more recent years, Warframe has made it to Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch for everyone to have fun with. With that being said, players are still isolated from one another—at least for now.
In this guide, we will be answering some of the most frequently asked questions regarding the future of cross-play and whether or not Warframe is a cross-platform game.
Does Warframe Have Cross-Platform Support?
In spite of the fact that Warframe is available on PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch, the game does not yet have cross-platform support. While Warframe fans certainly wish that this quality action RPG had crossplay, Digital Extremes has not yet confirmed any sort of support for this feature.
On the other hand, not all hope is lost. Months after the game was released back in March 2013, creative director, Steve Sinclair, spoke to Gamingbolt about how he wanted to allow for crossplay before the game even launched.
“Our goal is cross-platform play. Our goal is updating the PS4 version in sync with the PC version with all the same content, features and events. For those things to happen–for the ecosystem to be shared–we cannot diverge,” Sinclair explained.
“Of course we have amazing PS4 features for things that don’t split the player base – the DualShock 4 is the best controller I’ve ever touched. The Share features are perfect for our audience. The GPU is a beast and the game looks stellar running on the PS4! But we want there to be one ‘Warframe’ version that all players participate in.”
Almost seven years after its release, cross-platform play has still not yet been added to Warframe.
“Cross-play requires all platforms to be updated simultaneously, which is not what our development schedule allows for at the moment. Given the extra balancing passes needed to make this functionality fair for all platforms and the delay in releasing content that would be necessary for simultaneous updates, I, unfortunately, don’t see Warframe cross-play existing in the foreseeable future,” said Digital Extremes’ Studio Manager, Sheldon Carter, in a 2016 interview with WCCFTech.
This certainly contrasts what Steve Sinclair said to Gamingbolt back in 2013. Be that as it may, developing a game for multiple platforms certainly isn’t an easy task, so we may be waiting a while for Warframe cross-platform play. Warframe also doesn’t yet support account sharing, either.
While you could temporarily migrate your account from PC or console to the more recent Switch version of Warframe, it was a permanent move that couldn’t be reversed. Therefore, if you want to play the game on two different platforms, you will require two separate accounts. With all of that being said, what does the future of Warframe look like?
What Do We Know About the Future of Cross-Play?
Considering crossplay is still in its early days, chances are it will expand in the next few years. Ever since games such as Fortnite and Minecraft began to support cross-platform play, competitors are beginning to understand the importance of cross-platform games. In more recent years, games are supporting crossplay from launch, so we’re optimistic that Warframe will have cross-platform support in the future.
That said, it’s not easy to implement.
Last year, Steve Sinclair spoke to PC Gamer about crossplay in Warframe: “As a player, I would love it,” Sinclair said. “As a developer, it’s one of the highest-risk things we can do. Because a lot of the games that are doing it—it’s still very early days for this—A lot of those games came late to the platforms and had different negotiating environments to establish their contracts,” he explains. “On top of that, we are a game that is constantly changing. We change the game modes, we change the gameplay. We do huge, huge swings constantly, so, it is something that we’re all interested in and we do discuss it.”
As mentioned, the development of Warframe is persistent: hotfixes and patches are continuing to roll out on a regular basis, something that attracts fans to keep on playing the game. Last year, Sinclair couldn’t promise cross-platform play.
This year, it may be possible. Even if full cross-platform play may not ever be possible, the team working on Warframe seems optimistic about figuring out a way for players to share progress and items between platforms. So we’re excited to see what happens in the coming years.
While cross-platform play has not yet made it to Warframe, we don’t doubt it’ll be available sometime in the near future. Who knows, maybe Digital Extreme will pull what Epic Games did and manage to persuade Sony to allow for cross-play on PlayStation. Who knows what the future holds for Warframe.
