Tips to Become a Freelance Graphic Designer

If you are reading this article it probably means that you have finally figured out what to do with your life and how to set your own rules, work-wise. Being able to plan and deliver your work as you see it and when you see it ( deadlines are still worshipped though) pretty much describes freelance in all its glory. Stepping on a freelance path requires total devotion and understanding of all the business aspects that from now on you are becoming in charge of. It does give freedom of choice in many areas. Although you must dig deeper into a plethora of working details, other than just constant creativity. Let’s have a look at what it takes to pave a path for a freelance graphic designer.

Pitch your expertise

For sure you would not be choosing to do something for living and for joy if you were not good at it. Oh my dear…you have to be excellent at what you do. The competition is tough. Those who want to work for themselves being experts in your field are a whopping big number. Therefore, to win a client your portfolio ( we will talk about it later) should showcase some outstanding samples and quite promising designs. Also, it is worth mentioning that the graphic design realm is quite extensive. Let’s say you are confident about your solid skills in being a brand specialist, web designer, or motion graphics designer. Awesome! Do not stop with being an expert in one direction. Educate yourself to be a Jack of all tribes and…master OF ALL.

Focus on portfolio

Honestly, any self-respected marketer ( and yes, you are…you have to market your services) has to provide a customer with a well-rounded portfolio. It will demonstrate what you are made of, design-wise, and how well it fits the client’s needs. Depending on your expertise and resources you may utilize, you decide whether you totally create it from scratch or turn to a multitude of free templates. One way or another your portfolio should be rich in your works, it should communicate the message of your brand ( freelance also carries brand identity concept). It must underline your style with certain common features that make you stand out among others and be recognizable.

Start client-hunting

Bad news: without people in need of your services you do not develop your freelance career in design – you enhance your hobby field. Good news: finding clients and making them think of you for their next project will be a kick-start for your freelance business. First of all, start with freelance platforms. Offer your services, provide your quite impressive professional bio and explain why your potential clients should choose you among the other designers. Utilize social media platforms to promote the work you do. Your social media account ( business one in particular) is an effective tool to reach a vast number of people and persuade them to deal with you. Last, but not least – spread the word and let people know what you are doing now. Then they will know who to recommend if they bump into such a request from somebody.

Accept the annoying side of the business aspects

Now you work for yourself, your client’s list expands, and orders flow. No need to work for free for extra experience, or to over-deliver for a miserable price. Time to think about making it official. Which means you have to find a person who will do your finances ( bookkeeping, taxes). Or you might master this process on your own, though it does take some time to keep it all in order. Take care of the payment part; your invoices should carry all the information about your expectations ( terms, prepayment, currency, etc). Negotiating a deal, make sure to have a contract of all the expected “to-do” moments. Set goals, so that you can observe whether your career promotes and income grows. Also, always have savings in case of being in a slump situation ( it is life).

Have boundaries

Freelance work may be a bit over-consuming, and then “all work and no play” may lower down your enthusiasm. You do not need to over-exhaust yourself and take more than you can deliver. Sometimes it is OK to say no to your next order. No, you will not be phased away from the graphic design freelance market. The idea is for you not to lose the ignition and save the faith in the path you have chosen.

Conclusion

Deciding on pursuing a freelance career in graphic design you should always bear in mind all the aspects that go along with the artistic part. The idea of working for yourself and planning your days the way you know it is quite tempting. However, it is quite a complex experience. Looking for the clients, marketing your services, dealing with finances, and remembering to rest might be overwhelming in the initial phase. Persistence will serve well, and who knows, maybe throughout some time you will not be just a freelancer, but a proud owner of the graphic design services company.
