The Real Creation of Online eSports Gaming

In 1998, the game Half-Life was released by a company called Valve and their debut would go on to spawn dozens of sequels and help to give rise to the newest online gaming movement over two decades later in eSports.

What Valve soon realized at the time that through the dispensation of narrative and focus on action, the appeal would become the gaming itself, and not just getting from A to B like all other computer games of the time.

This change and switch towards the action helped set up the eSports industry that is now worth billions in today’s online market. This tied in with Valves Counter-Strike are the two lynchpins from which the influence of eSports hung.

The building blocks of eSport gaming

Any player that has experienced Counter-Strike will have immediately notices the SFX, along with the UI and the programming mechanics are exactly like that of Half-Life. This is because Valve was using the same GoldSCR engine in the development.

What this engine allowed was for more gaming physics to be added into the game. This, in turn, allows it to be more tactical. Shooting guns, for example, became more realistic to the user at the time. Value then pushed this tactical aspect of gaming and soon after upgraded features helped them to refine their graphics and the game’s playing experience.

The connection between Counter-Strike and Half-Life is obvious to those that have played the two games enough. But once the engine updates came in, there was no matching script, there was no story. In technical regards, Valve made the game 100% dedicated to the action of players and their fluidity. Which remained up until they released Half-Life Alyx, which was made using their Source 2 engine.

The birth of eSports

With the optimal game engine in place for the developer Valve, work began on what was to become their biggest game ever. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was released, and it changed how people would view eSports around the world. It took first place in the first-person shooter category and its success is unlikely to ever be matched by any other release.

The approach of the gaming development was simple. Valve removed unfair advantages, they scrapped additional features and made the experience entirely skill-based. The years of development from Half-Life, influencing Counter-Strike and forming a game that required skill to win, rather than following a narrative path is what changed it all. Skill means competition, competition bleeds sporting prowess, and this is where online esports betting steps in.

The global expansion of eSports popularity

Inside of the European market, player teams love it best when it came to playing CS:GO and other tactical shooter games. For the Asia market, there was a clear draw to multiplayer online battle arena games or MOBA for short.

The two most dominating countries that stood out in the world of gaming and eSport was that of the UK and Russia. Players from these two nations are still seen as the best and are making a name for themselves as online celebrities amongst the gaming youth that sees them as idols and gods of the industry.

The internet certainly helped new players to discover the possibilities and, in turn, allowed for sponsors to look at gaming as a sport and pick-up players to make gaming full-time jobs for the betting industry.

Valve, with one change of a single software engine and with a change of the narrative rules that come with video games, helped to define online gaming and betting. The market gained more traction in 2019 as an optional platform that casinos were adding to their service.

They had the market and the appeal, they only needed to present it to the online public as a new form of betting and sit back after to watch the success literally play out.

Sporting success for all taking part

CS:GO contests were generating millions of online views since its inception in 2015 and leading into 2019. Still to this day, Counter-Strike is one of the go-to-games for players to bet on and, in turn, one of the most in-demand games for gamers to be playing. This supply and demand stuck in a loop where everyone taking part is benefiting.

What has this spawned? Well, the top games of 2021 see League of Legends, Dota 2, Fortnite, and Player Unknown Battle Grounds. Now, these are old games, fully being rediscovered on modern platforms. It’s a little odd and crazy that a League of Legends made in 2009 is now the number one online eSports game of 2021, but it took a game made in 1998 to get us where we are now. The world is catching up – finally.
