Roulette: inside bets explained

When it comes to a game of Roulette, whether it be an American, European, or French version, there are many types of bets you can place before the iconic wheel begins to spin. These are broken down into what’s known as inside and outside bets. Inside bets refer to the bets made within the inner section of the table, and outside bets are the wagers placed on the outskirts of the table layout. Inside Bets

  • Basket

This bet type can be wagered on both the American and European Roulette tables, and is also commonly known as the ‘First Four’. To place a Basket bet, you must place a betting chip on sections 0, 1, 2, and 3. The payout odds for this bet type is 6:1.

  • Corner

A Corner bet, also known as a ‘Four Numbered bet’ or a ‘Square bet’, is a bet of four numbers placed with one chip. To place a Corner bet, you must place a chip on the line where four numbers meet, like a plus sign. The betting odds for a Corner bet is 8:1.

  • Five Numbered Bet

Similar to a Basket bet, this bet consists of the first five numbers on an American table only, as it requires the single and double zero layouts. To place a Five Numbered bet or ‘Top-Line bet’, as it is also known, you need a place a betting chip in boxes 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3. There is a 13.16% chance of this bet being successful, offering a 6:1 payout.

  • Line

Also known as a ‘Six Line bet’, a Line bet can be wagered when you place a betting chip at the end of two consecutive rows made up of three numbers, on the line where they meet. The betting odds for a Line bet is 5:1.

  • Snake Bet

A Snake bet refers to the serpent-like pattern you create when placing this wager on the Roulette table. To place a Snake bet, you must place betting chips on numbers 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32, and 34. This bet type has an odds of 2:1.

  • Split

A Split bet can be placed when a chip is put on the line between two separate numbers found next to each other within the table layout. The numbers can either be to the left or right of the other number or above or below, for example, 5/6 or 11/14. The odds of winning are 17:1.

  • Straight Up

A Straight Up bet is when you place your wager on a single number. This offers the highest payout in the game but is also the riskiest. The odds of winning a Straight Up bet are 35:1.

  • Street

Also known as a ‘Trio bet’ or a ‘Steam bet’, a Street bet is played when you place a betting chip down on the outside line of a row of three numbers, allowing you to place a wager on all three numbers in one go. If one of your numbers wins the spin, you’ll receive a payout of 11:1.
