Since there are no cars or motorbikes in Minecraft, you’ll have to think of alternate ways of getting around in this sandbox-survival game. Thankfully, there is a whole host of animals that you can ride across the land. Once tamed, horses are arguably one of the best ways to quickly get around in the enormous world of Minecraft. Aside from the ability to travel faster, you can even carry your stuff on a tamed horse as you would in the real world.
The real questions is: how do you tame a horse in Minecraft? In today’s step-by-step guide, we will be walking you through exactly how to do it.
#1 Find a Horse in Minecraft
The first and most obvious thing you’re going to need to do is find a wild horse in Minecraft. These can often be found in herds in Plains and Savanna biomes.
If you don’t mind cheating in Minecraft, you can also summon a horse by typing /summon horse in the chat box (console) and hitting Enter on PC. For this to work, you’ll need to turn cheats on when creating a new world.
#2 Tame the Wild Horse
Next, you’ll have to tame the wild horse so that it doesn’t run away the second you get close to it. To do this, you’ll first have to find some apples. In survival mode, apples drop at random when you chop down an oak tree. In creative mode, you can search for an apple in the Inventory menu.
Once you’ve obtained an apple, you can start feeding it to the horse. Simply get close to the horse and right-click on it with the apples in-hand until its head starts bobbing up and down.
Horse Food in Minecraft
We advise you to use an apple to tame a horse in Minecraft survival mode since they are fairly easy to find. However, there are some other horse-friendly food items that you can use to tame a horse. Below, we have listed all of the horse food items and their effects on the horse.
Food Heals (Hearts) Speeds Growth By Increased Taming By
Sugar 1 30 seconds +3
Wheat 2 20 seconds +3
Apple 3 1 minute +3
Golden Carrot 4 1 minute +5
Golden Apple 10 4 minutes +10
Hay Bale 20 3 minutes
#3 Mount the Horse
Now that the horse is full of apples and slightly less timid, you can now attempt to mount it. Using an empty inventory slot, right-click on the horse to jump right on it. If it throws you off, don’t worry. Simply feed it some more horse-friendly food and try again.
Once the horse has been tamed, a bunch of love hearts will start coming out of the horse. This is how you know you’ve successfully tamed the horse. Now, it’s time to domesticate it for your farm or home base.
#4 Put a Saddle on the Tame Horse
Once the horse is tame, you’ll need to put a saddle on it. In order to do this, simply open up your Inventory (E on PC) to display the horse’s very own Inventory. Next, all you have to do is place the saddle in the saddle slot found in the top left-hand corner of the Inventory menu.
To make it simple, there’s even a saddle icon so that you know exactly where to place it. If you wish to get off your horse to see how it looks with the saddle on, press Left Shift on PC, the Center button on Pocket Edition or the right stick found on PlayStation and Xbox controllers.
