Courtenay’s love for gaming started when she was handed a Game Boy SP as a child. From there her youthful gaming memories consist of hitting some Donkey Kong bongos and cruising around Vice City listening to 'Take Me to the Clouds Above' at an unsuitable age. Since, she has gained a love for both PC and console games, sometimes even jumping on mobile. Don’t judge! When she’s not writing for the site she enjoys travelling, film, and diving down the rabbit hole that is YouTube.

Aside from a toilet seat, your keyboard is one of the dirtiest things you come into contact with. The difference is, most people don’t think to wash their hands after using a computer. You use your keyboard to type away and eliminate enemies, but what about destroying all of the germs and bacteria?

It is important to keep your keyboard clean, especially if you use it on a daily basis. So, here are some useful steps to take to ensure your keyboard is dirt-free.

How to Clean Your Keyboard: Easy Tips

There are many ways you can clean a keyboard, but what are the best ways? You may think that wiping your keyboard down with a regular cloth does the job, well, unfortunately, it doesn’t. There are crumbs underneath your keyboard that a cloth simply can’t eliminate. Even if you get the best keyboard for Fortnite, it won’t do you much good when the buttons aren’t working properly.

Let’s take a look at the best ways to maintain your keyboard.

#1 Don’t Eat While Using It

The most obvious advice is to simply not eat around your keyboard. If you’re working long hours on a computer with limited amounts of breaks, it can be difficult not to eat at your desk. However, if you do, know all of those crumbs from your cookies and Cheetos can fall deep under your keys. Therefore, it is important to keep food and drinks away from your keyboard to prevent liquid spills and a build-up of gunk, and yes, that means keeping that sticky Mountain Dew away!

If you really must eat at your desk, take a break and shut the lid of your laptop or turn over your keyboard so nothing falls onto it.

#2 Tap Crumbs Out

Do you have so many crumbs in-between your keys that you could use them to create a new loaf of bread? Well, get ready to shake it off like Taylor Swift by tapping those crumbs loose, to remove debris from underneath your keys. Turn your keyboard upside down and shake it over a bin to ensure dirt doesn’t fall out onto your desk – this will be easier to do on a regular basis if you have one of the best wireless gaming keyboards.

To ensure all of the crumbs are out, remove keys using a keycap puller and tap again.

#3 Compressed Air

Compressed air is a convenient way to blast the dust out from between your keys. It is best to spray the keys from one side of the keyboard to the other, ensuring all of the dust blows out of the other side. Because of this, we advise that you use compressed air away from areas you want to keep clean as the spray blows debris around.

There is no difference between canned air and ‘gaming air’, so don’t spend more on the word ‘gaming’ in the title. It is also best to unplug your keyboard or shut down your laptop before using compressed air.

#4 Dust Vac

If you’ve used the compressed air spray but you don’t feel like all of the dust has disappeared, you can use a mini USB keyboard vacuum to finish off the job. These ensure every last bit of dirt is eliminated.

Don’t try to use a full-sized vacuum on a keyboard as keycaps could be sucked up along with dirt – you definitely don’t want to be rummaging through a vacuum bag, gross!

#5 Microfiber Cloth

Microfiber cloths are better than ordinary cloths as they attract dirt. Wiping your keyboard down with a microfibre cloth at least once a week will make a huge difference, ensuring dirt and grease doesn’t build up.

You can also use a microfiber cloth on your laptop screen to prevent dust from getting onto your keyboard when you shut it.

Additional Tips

  • Use cotton swabs or a brush to get between keys
  • To clean even deeper between keys, opt for cleaning putty gel
  • Purchase a cleaning brush for quick maintenance
  • Wash your hands after using a shared keyboard

Opt for a Washable Keyboard:

There isn’t such a thing as a keyboard that doesn’t get dirty, but there are ones that are easier to keep clean.

Keyboard Washed In A Sink

There are many great Logitech keyboards out there, but not many are able to handle a deep-clean. That’s why Logitech created the washable K310 gaming keyboard. It allows you to soak it in water and scrub it with the included keyboard brush, without the worry about ruining it – clean and clever!

Step-By-Step Recap
