Discord Javascript Error

Discord is a free-to-use “voice and chat” application made specifically for the gaming community. Albeit, like any tool you use on your high-grade gaming laptop, Discord certainly isn’t perfect. If you’ve ever faced a frustrating JavaScript error when trying to install or run the app, don’t worry, it isn’t uncommon.

As irritating as it can be, we here at Game Gavel have discovered plenty of solutions to get you back online and chatting to your pals again. In this step-by-step guide, we will be specifically discussing how to fix the Discord JavaScript error. Let’s get into it, shall we?

#1 Delete Discord Files in AppData and LocalAppData

Just like most programs, Discord temporarily stores data onto your computer to help it run efficiently. But sometimes, those files can become corrupt, which in turn, causes problems like the infamous “Discord stopped working“.

The first thing we suggest doing when a JavaScript error occurs is to delete Discord files in AppData and LocalAppDate. Here’s how we do it:

  1. Close Discord via the Task Manager
  • Right-click on the Taskbar and click on Task Manager
  • Right-click on Discord and select End task
  1. Hit the Windows key + R to open the Run window
  2. Type: %appdata% in the box and hit OK
  3. In the window that opens up, right-click on the Discord folder and select Delete
  4. Once deleted, return to the Run window (Windows key + R)
  5. Type: %localappdata% in the Run window and hit OK
  6. As before, locate the Discord folder, right-click and select Delete
  7. Restart your computer
  8. Now, relaunch the Discord setup file and reinstall the software

#2 Whitelist Discord Files in Antivirus Software

If you have AntiVirus software installed onto your PC, you may experience a JavaScript error as you attempt to install Discord. This is due to the fact that AntiVirus apps are known for targeting certain Discord installation files to stop them during the installation process.

Discord can then no longer access those files to complete the process and therefore errors can occur. It can be annoying, I agree, but the fix is fairly simple: all you need to do is whitelist the specific files. In this example, we will be using Avast Antivirus.

  1. If you don’t already have Avast, download it for free
  2. Open up Avast by double-clicking on the icon
  3. Once open, locate and select the Protection tab in Avast
  4. Next, select Virus Chest to display quarantined files
  5. Locate the files associated with Discord (they will have Discord in the name)
  6. Click on the three dots next to the file name and select Restore and add exceptions
  7. Do this for every file related to Discord
  8. Restart the installation process for Discord

#3 Uninstall and Reinstall Discord

You’re having a problem with your PC and so you call your local I.T guy. You tell him (or her) your issue and they instantly respond: “Have you tried turning it off and on again?”

Now, you can roll your eyes as much as you want, but 90% of the time it works. In this case, if all else fails, one thing you can do is uninstall and reinstall Discord. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open the Run dialog by pressing the Windows key + R
  2. Type Control Panel and click Ok to open up the Control Panel
  3. Under Programs, select Uninstall a program
  4. Locate Discord, click on it and press Uninstall at the top of the list
  5. Once uninstalled, follow the steps under Solution 1 (Delete Discord Files in AppData and LocalAppData)
  6. Reinstall Discord as normal. This time, Discord should install as normal without the JavaScript error

Discord is a brilliant application used by gamers across the globe, including the team here at Game Gavel. Unfortunately, you may face a range of problems when attempting to install the application onto your gaming PC.
