It’s difficult to believe that it’s been almost an entire decade since Cyberpunk 2077 was initially announced to the public. As a matter of fact, it was formally announced two years before we even got to play as Geralt of Rivia. Now that The Witcher 3 is done and dusted, CD Projekt Red is fully focused on its new action-packed game set in Night City.
Cyberpunk 2077 is an upcoming RPG we’ve been craving ever since we caught a glimpse of the first trailer. And now we have a release date, we are all counting down the days until we can finally get our hands on the game.
Since the release date is now closer than ever, we have a tonne of information about Cyberpunk 2077 that we’d love to share with the fans. Which is why we have decided to collect all of the important information surrounding the game so that you’re up-to-date with the latest trailers, news, and rumors. With all of that said, here’s everything we know about Cyberpunk 2077 so far.
What Is Cyberpunk 2077?
Back in 2012, Mike Pondsmith—the genius behind Cyberpunk 2020—decided to start turning his 2D pen-and-paper RPG into a 3D virtual paradise. As far as we are aware, Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be one of the biggest open-world RPGs of 2020, something we don’t doubt one bit. From the trailers we’ve seen over the years, we can clearly see that CD Projekt Red is moving on from the fantasy-themed world of The Witcher 3.
Contrasting arguably one of the best RPGs of all time, Cyberpunk 2077 is set in the vibrant, Sci-Fi movie-esque Night City. But when will we get to play the game?
Cyberpunk 2077 Release Date: When Is It Coming Out?
After 7 years of waiting, we were finally given a release date for Cyberpunk 2077 by the Matrix star himself. That’s right, at E3 2019, Keanu Reeves announced to already-screaming fans that Cyberpunk 2077 is set to launch on 16th April 2020.
Update (01/20/2020): Cyberpunk 2077 Is Being Delayed
After many years of development—around fifteen to be exact—Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed until later this year. Previously expected to be released on April 16, 2020, CD Projekt Red is moving the release date to September 17, 2020.
“We are currently at a stage where the game is complete and playable, but there’s still work to be done,” CD Projekt Red Tweeted in an official announcement. “Night City is massive – full of stories, content, and places to visit, but due to the sheer scale and complexity of it all, we need more time to finish playtesting, fixing and polishing. We want Cyberpunk 2077 to be our crowning achievement for this generation and postponing launch will give us precious months we need to make the game perfect.” Perhaps there’s another reason for such a delay?
In a 2019 interview with Kotaku, CD Projekt Red’s co-founder, Marcin Iwiński, mentioned how the studio wishes to improve its work-life balance by allowing developers to take time off. “This is what we’ve been working hard toward. And I actually would [like] for us to also be known for treating developers with respect.”
By implementing a “non-obligatory crunch policy”, developers no longer have to work nights or at the weekend. This is said to ensure that the development of Cyberpunk 2077 is “less intense” compared to the development of The Witcher 3—an action role-playing game by CD Projekt. This, alongside the fact that Night City is enormous, could be exactly why this highly-anticipated RPG has been delayed until later this year.
But what platforms will the game be available on?
While CD Projekt Red’s development team is focusing primarily on consoles, you’ll be delighted to know that alongside the PS4 and Xbox One, Cyberpunk 2077 will be available on PC and Google Stadia. We also expect to see this game on some next-gen consoles such as the PS5 and Xbox Project Scarlett. The real question is, what’s the price tag on this game?
How Much Will Cyberpunk 2077 Cost?
Currently, you can preorder Cyberpunk 2077 for PC for £49.90—a price I’m certainly prepared to pay for a CD Projekt title. If you’re a gamer who’s obsessed with bonus materials and you’re willing to spend the extra cash, Cyberpunk 2077 collector’s edition can be preordered now for a whopping £249.99.
Sure, that’s a fairly significant amount of money, but it comes with some of the best physical and digital goodies I’ve ever seen from a collectors edition. If you’ve already taken a look at what’s included, you’d be lying if you said the 10-inch V statue doesn’t look absolutely incredible.
Cyberpunk 2077 Trailer (s)
The most recent Cyberpunk 2077 trailer reveals 15-minutes of never-before-seen gameplay footage that may or may not make into the final game. Rather than spoiling the deep dive video, we strongly encourage you to go and watch it for yourself.
That’s if you don’t mind spoiling some potential gameplay footage for some attractive visuals and badass fight scenes.
Deep Dive Q&A With Cyberpunk 2077 Developers
For further information regarding Cyberpunk 2077, check out the Deep Dive Q&A featuring some members of the development team—including a senior level designer, a lead quest designer, and a quest design coordinator.
The video is more than an hour long but it’s quite resourceful if you’re as hyped for Cyberpunk as we are.
Cyberpunk 2077, E3 2019 – Keanu Reeves!!!
This year at E3 2019, we learned more about Cyberpunk 2077 than ever before. Most importantly, we learned that film star Keanu Reeves would feature in the game as central character Johnny Silverhand. And when he came out on stage after the Official E3 2019 Cinematic Trailer, it was breathtaking, to say the least.
Once fans had finally stopped screaming—at least most of them—Reeves briefly spoke about how CD Projekt Red initially approached him.
“They were going on and on about how they’d create this vast open-world with a branching storyline. How you’d be able to customize your character through in-game choices.”
He went on to say how he is always drawn to fascinating stories, and from what we can see so far, Cyberpunk 2077 is certainly captivating.
Cyberpunk 2077 Miles Tost Interview
In March 2019, PlayStation went behind the scenes with CD Projekt Red in a 5-minute Creating Cyberpunk 2077 PS4 clip. In the video, senior-level designer Miles Tost expressed the challenges they faced while attempting to turn a pen-and-paper RPG into a video game for PC and console. Tost went on to explain how: “The freedom that you have in a pen-and-paper RPG is something that we have yet to achieve in any game I would say.”
The narrator continues to describe how Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in a parallel timeline, giving the CD Projekt Red team the freedom to create a game that “respected and referenced the source material.”
Cyberpunk 2077 Gameplay Trailer
One of, if not the, most important videos we’ve seen thus far is the Cyberpunk 2077 Gameplay Reveal which consists of 48 sweet minutes of gameplay footage. As we have briefly touched on, everything you see until the final product is simply a work in progress and therefore things could potentially change.
Nevertheless, the video revealed brand new gameplay footage that includes character creation, brutal fight scenes and a shedload of other features that we simply can’t wait for.
Cyberpunk 2077 Cinematic Trailer: Behind the Scenes
A recent Behind the Scenes trailer from CD Projekt Red gave us an insight into how Cyberpunk 2077 is currently being made. The fast-paced video fittingly shows us some untextured models as well as some clips of the motion capture performers in action.
There isn’t much in-depth footage on the actual motion capture process, nonetheless, it’s one of the best Cyberpunk 2077 videos we’ve seen this year. You can take a look at the eye-catching behind-the-scenes video for yourself by clicking on the link below.
Cyberpunk 2077: News and Features
As Cyberpunk 2077 is now closer than ever before, we have a bunch of up-to-date news regarding the game. So, without further ado, here’s the latest and greatest news surrounding Cyberpunk 2077.
Will There Be a Morality System?
Sometimes, your in-game actions have consequences. Whether they are good or bad totally depends on the options you choose in-game and what path you decide to take. You see, video games that feature a morality system allow you to be in control over the direction of the story. Albeit, unlike Fallout and Undertale, Cyberpunk 2077 will not have a morality system. Don’t get me wrong, player choice is still a massive part of the game, you just won’t have ‘good’ or ‘bad’ choices as you would in a game with a set morality system.
Quest director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz spoke to GamingBolt regarding the morality system. “We don’t have a moral system per se. However, to complete it non-lethally you have to be very good at stealth. Invest in points that allow you to stealth better, use weapons that will allow you to incapacitate the enemy instead of killing them, to make the moral choices that will allow you to avoid killing people throughout the game.”
Don’t Want to Harm Anyone? No Problem!
According to CD Projekt Red’s art director, Katarzyna Redesiuk, you can finish Cyberpunk 2077 without killing a single person as a non-lethal character. More specifically, Redesiuk mentioned that you can complete the game “without leaving a scratch on anyone.”
However, as Tomaszkiewicz mentioned to GamingBolt, you will have to be very good at stealth in order to complete Cyberpunk 2077 non-lethally. Choices are a massive part of Cyberpunk 2077, and although the choice to not kill anyone is intriguing, I definitely won’t be taking that route. Especially after seeing all of the sweet ways to kill people in the gameplay demo at E3 2019.
What About Multiplayer?
CD Projekt Red is renowned for creating games that focus on a single-player experience, but that may all change sooner than you think. At the beginning of September, CD Projekt Red confirmed via Twitter that multiplayer for Cyberpunk 2077 is currently in the works. Following this Tweet, the team announced that multiplayer isn’t a priority and it will follow the single-player content set to release in April 2020.
“The plan, for now, is to deliver Cyberpunk 2077 in April, then follow up with DLCs (free!) and single-player content, and — once we’re done — invite you for some multiplayer action.” The thing is, not everyone was pleased to hear this news, some gamers even mentioned how they don’t want multiplayer at all. So we’d love to hear your thoughts on multiplayer for Cyberpunk 2077. Will Cyberpunk 2077 online work? Or is it far too early to predict how it will turn out?
Is Character Creation Possible?
Ever since we knew about the existence of Cyberpunk 2077, everyone has been asking the same question: Can you create your own character in Cyberpunk 2077? This was later confirmed during a 2018 gameplay reveal that includes a character creation screen that begins with choosing your sex.
Once you’ve selected your sex, you can then change the appearance of your character. But before you do that, you’ll have to define their backstory. According to the demo, “what you choose here will unlock different possibilities later in the game.”
Additionally, you’ll be able to change your stats as seen in the demo. Stats include Strength, Constitution, Intelligence, Reflexes, Tech, and Cool. No, cool doesn’t refer to how cool your character will be. Rather, how they deal with stress during tough situations in Cyberpunk 2077.
Like many games on the market, when choosing your stats, you have a total of 25 points to spend. This means that Cyberpunk 2077 has half as many stats compared to Cyberpunk 2020. With that said, this isn’t the final product, so we’re looking forward to creating our own wild characters in 2020.
This year, CD Projekt Red’s director explained to Gamasutra that the team is working on a character creation system that will allow for better gender representation. Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz explained: “Of course. It’s a very sensitive and important subject I believe. We have put a lot of thought into this. One of the things we want to do in the final game (which we couldn’t show in the demo yet because as you mentioned it’s a work in progress) is to give the players as many options of customization at the beginning of the game as we can.”
Cyberpunk 2077 First-Person
In order to maximize immersion, CD Projekt Red has made the decision to turn Cyberpunk 2077 into a first-person RPG. Of course, not everyone was exhilarated when they heard about this news since it contrasts the third-person perspective as seen in The Witcher 3. I agree that first-person shooters aren’t for everyone, but there’s a reason CD Projekt Red decided to go with this perspective.
Aside from immersion, developers want you to feel fully in control of your customizable character as you play. After all, you won’t be playing as a premade character in this upcoming RPG.
Will There Be Microtransactions in Cyberpunk 2077?
If you’re familiar with CD Projekt Red, you’ll know that the company doesn’t flood its games with compulsory microtransactions that every gamer despises. In a Tweet made back in 2017, @CDPROJEKTRED mentioned that its upcoming RPG won’t include them, either. In the Tweet, CD Projekt Red expressed how Cyberpunk 2077 will be similar to TW3 in a sense that it’ll be a story-driven RPG with “No hidden catch, you get what you pay for — no bullshit, just honest gaming like with Wild Hunt”
They ended the tweet by saying: “We leave greed to others”—a pretty savage statement if we do say so ourselves.
Cyberpunk 2077 on Stadia
A couple of months ago, Google officially announced that Cyberpunk 2077 will be coming to the Stadia next year. This was confirmed after the official Google Stadia Twitter account Tweeted: “#CYBERPUNK 2077 ON STADIA. That’s it. That’s the tweet.” Included in the Tweet is an Official Dev Diary video that goes behind the scenes with the CD Projekt Red team working on Cyberpunk 2077.
While we don’t yet have an official release date, we’re excited to see how it plays out on the Stadia later in 2020.
Will Cyberpunk 2077 Be on Steam?
CD Projekt Red confirmed last year that Cyberpunk 2077 will be available on the digital distribution platform, Steam. Currently, you can pre-purchase Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam for £49.99. The game will be available on Steam alongside the official release date (16 August 2020) for you to enjoy across a stunning ultra-wide gaming monitor.
Cyberpunk 2077 – Afterlife: The Card Game
Just as The Witcher has Gwent, Cyberpunk 2077 is getting Afterlife: The Card Game. That’s right, Cyberpunk 2077 is getting its very own physical card game that will allow you to play the role of a Fixer—”data brokers and masterminds of Night City.” While we don’t have an official release date as of yet, we do know that it’s being created in collaboration with CMON!, the company behind the latest God of War car game.
Cyberpunk 2077 Rumors
As with every upcoming game, there are many rumors that surround Cyberpunk 2077 that may or may not be true. Below, we have listed a bunch of them and where they have come from.
Lady Gaga in Cyberpunk 2077?
Back in 2012, Lady Gaga Tweeted out a random mix of letters and numbers that the Official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account replied to. Now, although it would have been fun to see her play alongside Keanu Reeves, she sadly won’t be making an appearance in the game. Personally, I think she’d fit into Cyberpunk 2077 perfectly.
But, for now, Lady Gaga in Cyberpunk 2077 is just a pipe dream.
Character Tone of Voice: Can You Change It?
Recently, a fan directly messaged @CyberpunkGame on Twitter with a very interesting question regarding character creation in Cyberpunk 2077. In the fan message, the user asked if there will be a way to alter the tone of voice of their character using a pitch slider—as seen in The Sims. Although this would be a brilliant addition to the game, @Cyb2077 responded by saying that at this very moment, voice editing isn’t included in the game.
In addition to this, they go on to say that their voices “might be different due to cyberware they have installed”—a vague yet interesting response.
Keanu Reeves Has an Action Figure
One of the latest additions to the ever-growing Cyberpunk 2077 merchandise collection is a Johnny Silverhand figure by McFarlane Toys. Set to release in Spring 2020, you can currently pre-order a 7″ Johnny Silverhand figure, a 12″ Johnny Silverhand figure, and a 7″ male V figure based on the customizable protagonist.
Currently, there’s no word on a female V figure. There’s also another 7″ Johnny Silverhald (variant) figure that comes with a malorian gun and a duffle bag instead of a guitar and a bottle—which is even more badass if I do say so myself. Additionally, all of the figures feature 22 moving parts so that you can customize their pose to suit your personal preferences.
Cyberpunk 2077 Soundtrack: What Will Night City Sound Like?
Last year at The Game Awards, CD Projekt Red gave us a glimpse of the musicians that will be featured in Cyberpunk 2077. In the Cyberpunk 2077 – Official Behind The Music Trailer, we got to hear Run the Jewels, Refused, Grimes, A$AP Rocky, Gazelle Twin, Ilan Rubin, Richard Devine, Nina Kravitz, Rat Boy, and Tina Guo speak up about what they wanted to bring to Night City. As if the game didn’t sound incredible enough. You can watch the full 1:33 video for yourself below:
Conclusion
Cyberpunk 2077 is an upcoming open-world RPG that we simply can’t wait for—and we’re sure you can’t wait, either. As we receive more information regarding Cyberpunk 2077, we will be updating this article so that you can keep up-to-date with the latest news. With all of that said, we can’t wait to see how the game turns out in 2020.
