Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey — Daughters of Artemis

If you ended up here, you’re probably looking for information on how to complete the Goddesses’ Hunt questline in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. “The Daughters of Artemis” is only the first of eight quests in that chain (but it’s also the hardest of them by far, so maybe you do just want help with that one).

In either case, we’re sorry for the way Google interprets people’s imprecise search terms.

Starting the Hunt

We recommend that you hold off on starting these quests until you’re at least level 35. (The game says 38, but we’ve found that it’s possible to handle most quests at a 2- or 3-level deficit without too much extra trouble.)

Also, if you’re a pure stealth build, we recommend either redistributing your skill points among the Warrior and/or Hunter trees or loading up on equipment and abilities that enable you to inflict Assassin damage in open combat. Most of the beasts you’ll be hunting have boatloads of health and none of them can be one-shotted from stealth, so get ready for some lengthy fights.

Finding Daphnae

When you’re ready, head to the Sacred Lands of Apollo in Phokis and find the Temple of Artemis. Daphnae, the current matron of the Daughters of Artemis, should be hanging around somewhere in this area. (FYI, you can romance her later on if you’re so inclined.)

Be warned: The quest she’s about to give you is the worst, dumbest quest in the entire game. Bring a full quiver of arrows, your strongest weapons, and all the patience you can muster.

Legendary Animal #1: The Kalydonian Boar

When you’re ready to be annoyed, travel west to the mountains at the edge of the Sacred Lands of Apollo. Look for a swamp on a plateau with a large cave nearby. This is going to suck.

The boar you’re about to fight has:

✔ An absolutely absurd amount of health

✔ Extremely damaging attacks that are easy to dodge but sometimes mysteriously home in on you and connect anyway

✔ The ability to summon nearly endless hordes of minions

✔ The ability to fully heal itself if you leave the area for even one second

✔ An annoying tendency to auto-kill you when it’s almost dead

There’s no special trick to killing this stupid pig, no particular strategy that’s going to bring it down in a reasonable amount of time. Just hit it from the side, poison it constantly, dodge backward in a circle, and hope it doesn’t kill you with its magic mind powers at the very end of the fight.

Throughout the battle, the boar will summon packs of smaller boars. It will do this a lot, and it’s always annoying. You have no hope of inflicting any real damage on the boss boar while the little ones are still alive, so you’ll be forced to deal with them, and they hit almost as hard as the boss does. Kill them one by one, land a few more hits on the boss, then get ready to deal with yet another wave.

Whenever you take even a single hit, use Second Wind to heal and go full defense until your health is back to full. This is a long, slow, repetitive battle of attrition. You’ll just have to outlast the pig, that’s all there is to it.

I hate this dumb boar, in case that wasn’t clear.

It’s worse than Medusa, the Cyclops, and the Minotaur all put together.

Legendary Animal #2: The Hind of Keryneia

After that fresh batch of nonsense, the next legendary animal you’ll have to hunt is a walk in the park. It’s a big ol’ deer that lives near the lake in Artemision Point, in the northwest region of the Abantis Islands.

The Hind’s attacks are pretty basic, but its antler uppercut move, in particular, really hurts if it connects. It can also kick you with its back legs for medium damage, and it has a charge attack that is well-telegraphed and easy to dodge.

The Hind has low health and defense, and it can’t rotate very quickly, so pummel it from the sides and you should bring it down in short order.

Legendary Animal #3: The Nemean Lion

As far as the legendary hunts go, the Nemean Lion is slightly harder than average. Its lair is near the Sinkholes of Herakles in Argolis. It’s vulnerable to fire, so keep that in mind when selecting your equipment.

When you arrive, the white lion will have several regular lions for backup, but thankfully, they don’t respawn once they’re dealt with. Take them out first so you can focus on the big one in relative peace.

The boss’s attacks deal medium-high damage, but they (probably) can’t one-shot you, so you should be okay as long as you keep your health full. Its most dangerous attack is a roar that can stun you, which is a real problem if any of its friends are still around. Even if you’ve killed them all, you might get caught in a devastating combo if you’re stunned at close range, so when you see the boss lower its head, dodge away to escape the roar.

The Nemean Lion has more health than most of the other legendary animals, but, offensively speaking, it’s not too crazy, so just focus on avoiding its attacks and you should bring it down before too long.

Legendary Animal #4: The Erymanthian Boar

This boar (found in the Erymanthos Foothills in Elis) is mildly annoying, but it’s nowhere near as infuriating as the first one. Its health is high but not ridiculous, and it can’t summon any allies. The biggest thing to watch out for here is the poison rain in the area, which never stops and will continuously damage you throughout the fight.

The boar is immune to poison, so don’t bother using any (although it would be hilarious if you could just show up and watch the rain kill it). Fire works well, though. Throughout the fight, watch out for uneven terrain that can trip you up. Hit the boar with strong attacks like Overpower and Hero Strike at every opportunity—you’ll want to wrap this up as quickly as possible because of the constant poison damage you’ll be taking.

Heal as needed, strike hard and often, and the boar should fall without giving you too much trouble.

Legendary Animal #5: Kallisto the Bear

You’re halfway there! Actually, you’re like 90% done with this quest chain, because that dumb Kalydonian Boar is worse than the other seven targets combined. When you’re ready to face a thousand-pound bear, head to the Golden Fields in Arkadia.

The bad news is that this bear hits really hard and can one-shot even the beefiest of characters. The good news is that its attacks are slow and easy to dodge, so as long as you see them coming, you should be okay.

Use fire-based attacks to deal extra damage, and inflict poison to weaken the bear’s attacks enough to (maybe) enable you to survive an extra hit. For the most part, there’s no particular strategy that we recommend for this fight. Just don’t get hit and whittle the bear down at your leisure.

Legendary Animal #6: The Kretan Bull

The Kretan Bull lives near the Fertile Battleground in Messara. It’s similar to the bear you just fought in that it hits really hard and has a fair amount of health. The main difference here is that its attacks are a bit harder to dodge, so overall, it’s the more dangerous target of the two.

Ranged fighters beware: The bull can close the distance really fast with its charge attack, so stay on your toes and don’t assume you’re safe just because you’re twenty meters away. The charge is powerful enough to OHKO glass cannon builds, and it’s also hard to dodge. The standard “scoot” dodge may not put you far enough out of the way to avoid being hit, so you’ll want to hold the dodge button for the slower but farther-reaching dodge roll.

As is the case with most of the other legendary animals, you’re better off attacking the bull from the side, but you’re not completely safe even then. Watch out when the bull pauses and grunts—that means it’s about to do a sideways lunge that can knock you down.

Use quick, hard-hitting attacks, avoid the horns and the rear hooves, and you should emerge victorious.

Legendary Animal #7: The Krokottas Hyena

Whereas most of the legendary animals are fairly slow and strong, the Krokottas Hyena is a quick little bugger that likes to jump around a lot. It makes its home on Kythera Island, in the southern region of Skandeia Bay. It’s weak to fire, so plan accordingly.

Most of the hyena’s attacks aren’t too damaging, but it can attack rapidly. You’ll want to stay at a medium distance throughout the fight, about ten feet away—it’ll lunge at you if you’re farther away or launch a multi-hit combo if you’re too close.

We found the hyena’s attacks to be easier to parry than those of the other legendary animals, so timed counterattacks can be a viable strategy, especially if you’re having a hard time hitting the beast otherwise. It has a medium amount of health, so it shouldn’t take you too long to whittle it down. All in all, the hyena is one of the easiest targets you’ll face during this questline.

Legendary Animal #8: The Lykaon Wolf

The final legendary beast can be found on the Dioskouroi Peninsula in Lakonia. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you find a pack of three wolves, one of which is noticeably bigger than the others.

Like the Kalydonian Boar, the Lykaon Wolf can summon more friends by howling, but you’ll want to react differently when it does so. Whereas the boar’s minions make it nearly impossible to continue the fight until you deal with them, the small wolves are more of a nuisance than a threat (and they’ll just keep coming if you kill them), so it’s best to ignore them and focus on the big guy.

That being said, if you find yourself drowning in wolves to the point that you can’t focus on the boss, a powerful area-of-effect attack or a few well-placed death arrows can clear them out in short order.

The Lykaon Wolf itself isn’t actually all that dangerous. It bites harder than regular wolves and has more health, but not by a huge margin in either case. Its main form of attack is to summon other wolves, so you’ll find that you can end this fight fairly quickly if you keep your eye on the prize.

Legendary Animal #9: Daphnae

Wait, what? Yes, that’s right, when you bring Daphnae the last legendary pelt, she’ll demand that you fight her to the death—and threaten to have all of her friends hunt you down if you refuse.

Call us closed-minded, but that seems both silly and overly harsh. Kind of a dick move, Daphnae.

The dialogue options available to you during your final conversation with Daphnae make it seem like it’s possible to talk her out of her insane plan, but it’s not. No matter what, you’re either going to fight her now or make enemies of the Daughters of Artemis for the rest of the game.

If you accept her challenge, you’ll find that she’s only slightly stronger than an average fort commander. She’s fairly weak, defensively speaking, but she’s quick and her attacks hurt if they connect. When she rushes toward you, try interrupting her with Hero Strike or Overpower. Hit her a few times with your strongest abilities and you’ll win the fight.

Once you’ve slain Daphnae, her huntress warriors will elect you as their new leader and will no longer attack you unless you start a fight with them. Either way, by now you should have a full set of Artemis’s Armor, a nice pile of XP, and a lifelong hatred of boars.

Conclusion

There you have it—one of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey’s longest quest chains is done and over with. Need any help with navigating all of the important choices in the game, or with romancing all 15 date-able NPCs?
