It’s been over a year since the latest installment of God of War was released. And with it, the developers decided to trade in the hack-and-slash combat mechanics for more strategic gameplay akin to Dark Souls or The Witcher. It also has heavier RPG gameplay elements.
The game is massive. The campaign can take you 22 hours to complete. If you incorporate some side quests and exploration, it will take you a maximum of 33 hours. But for the hard-core completionists out there, you’re looking at around 58 hours. Also, GoW has one of the best gaming soundtracks ever. If you don’t already own a suitable sound system, we recommend looking at some high-quality PS4 headsets under $50 so you don’t miss this amazing experience.
If you’re reading this guide, you’re probably on the far end of the spectrum, trying to get your money’s worth by extracting every single experience you can find from God of War. I’m here to help you in your quest for full game completion. In this guide, I’m going to show you how to find and solve all 12 of God of War’s treasure maps.
God of War Treasure Maps
By finding and solving all twelve of the God of War treasure maps, you’ll earn yourself the Treasure Hunter trophy. Another great achievement and award to add to your trophy case and show off. But you have to earn it and it isn’t as easy as it seems.
Basically, treasure maps in this awesome PS4 exclusive work like treasure maps in the real world. You discover a map while exploring an area. You follow it using visual and written cues until you get to the treasure. It’s really as easy as it sounds, especially if you know the lore and know your way around Midgard.
But for most of us, God of War’s world is dizzyingly huge, the lore is deep and even if you manage to find a treasure map, its very vague clues and directions can be a bit hard to decipher. So we thought we’d simplify it for you. With each map, I’ll give you a brief description of how to find it first and then how to conquer it and find the buried loot.
#1 God of War Treasure Map: Kneel Before Thor!
How and Where to Find the Map
This map can be found in the Landsuther Mines. You first visit them during the Dues Ex Malachite favor. The mines are located to the South West of the Lake of Nine. Once you get to the mines, you’ll have to descend to the lowest levels via a set of wooden planks.
Once you get to the lowest level, you’ll need to follow the track until you meet a lift/elevator which should be on your left. Climb into the lift. It will take you back to the first floor into a room with a coffin. Near the coffin in a little gap, you’ll find a red chest and the ‘Kneel Before Thor’ Treasure Map.
How to Solve It and Uncover the Treasure
The Treasure Map’s clue reads: “I’ve lived to serve the god of thunder and I bury my greatest treasure right where all inhabitants of Midgard should dwell: at the feet of the God of gods.”
The treasure is buried near what appears to be a foot of a statue at the Lookout Tower. You’ll need to get to it via boat. The treasure is located near Tyr’s Bridge. It is found to the right of a Jotnar (More Than Myth) shrine. You’ll be able to see the dig spot if you picked up the map from the Landsuther Mines.
#2 God of War Treasure Map: Turtle’s Tribute
How and Where to Find the Map
This map can be found in the witch’s cave (under the witch’s house). You need to head to the lowest level of the cave – the river pass. Once you get there, you need to search for a small waterfall. It should be near the Nornir Chest.
The waterfall has a Shatter Crystal underneath it. You’ll need to get to it using the light bridges. Once you get to the Shatter Crystal, pick it up and shatter it against the wall of red sap (tree branches) to the left of the Nornir chest and then use Atreus to shatter it with the lightning bow. This will reveal a ladder/beam that you can climb up. Climb up the wall into the room and you should find the map near on the ground near the far wall.
How to Solve It and Uncover the Treasure
The clue reads: “Where the leaves are red, and the moss is green, I buried my treasure where the Tortoise doth dream.”
Finding the treasure is pretty cut and dry. It’s basically near the same place you found the treasure. You need to head up back to the witch’s cabin. The treasure’s dig spot is located near the turtles left leg, just short of his foot, in front of two large stones that are separated by a log. If you look around the mossy area there, you’ll find the dig spot and consequently, the treasure.
#3 God of War Treasure Map: Dead and Bloated
How and Where to Find the Map
This map can be found in the Volunder Mines. They can be accessed through the Cliffs of the Raven. Right after you meet the Soul Eater, follow it further down and then press up against the wall on the right until you encounter a chain at the back which Kratos can climb down from. You’ll find the treasure map next to a red chest.
How to Solve It and Uncover the Treasure
The clue reads: “The troll who killed my kin is slain, but the battle has taken its toll. I’ve buried whatever I have left near his corpse. Ingrid and I used to frequent this beach to watch the sun rise over the temple.”
It’s another very cut and dry treasure hunt. The treasure is buried right next to the body of a giant troll in the Cliffs of the Raven. You’ll have to traverse and navigate through to the back of the Cliffs of the Raven if it’s your first time there. Once you slide down the chain, it shouldn’t be hard to find the dead troll and the dig spot. It’s right next to his belly.
#4 God of War Treasure Map: Hunter’s Kingdom
How and Where to Find the Map
This map is actually pretty easy to find. All you need to do is navigate your boat to the southeast part of the Lake of Nine which will take you to the Lookout Tower. Dock your boat there and follow the shoreline along the beach and you’ll find the treasure map on the sandy floor near some puddles and wet spots.
How to Solve It and Uncover the Treasure
The clue reads: “Motsognir, ruler of man and beast. I came to his kingdom to learn if he had obtained the ingredients to forge the Armor of Legend. All I found was death and sorrow. I leave this offering in memory of those who suffered in the Dwarf’s King’s quest for glory.”
Quite a lamentful clue, right? Since the clue mentions the Dwarf King’s kingdom, you’ll have to travel to Veithurgard to find the treasure. You’ll also notice that the location of the treasure is in the name of the treasure map itself. It’s called the Hunter’s Kingdom after all. Where else could be better to hunt than a place whose ward was a collector of monstrous animals?
The treasures dig spot can be found in the mainland, near the left of the entire area of Veithurgard. You’ll need to head over to the giant door locked by runes and adorned by the Dwarf King’s statutes. Do not go through the door. Go to the left of the door, following the wall to meet a broken and fallen head of a statue. At the neck of the broken statue piece, you’ll find the treasure.
#5 God of War Treasure Map: The Last Place They’d Look
How and Where to Find the Map
To find the treasure map, you’ll need to visit The Mountain. It will have to be the second time you travel through the mountain to meet the summit. The map isn’t hard to find. It’s located in the mountain, at the top of the lift. If you follow the path lined with the giant red crystals, you’ll find it right in the middle of the track.
How to Solve It and Uncover the Treasure
The clue reads: “The Valkyries will hunt me until my last breath. If they seek what is mine, I shall hide it right under their noses.” Once again, from the clue, we can surmise that the treasure is located in the Council of the Valkyries. The loot is located in the circular room with the eight thrones. The treasure should be situated between the second and third throne on the right.
#6 God of War Treasure Map: The Historian
How and Where to Find the Map
This map is located in the Ruins of The Ancient. Instead of following the water through the passageway, dock your boat, at the very north of the Lake of Nine. If this is your first time reaching this area, you’ll have to battle an Ancient. Once you get past the Ancient, you’ll find the map near the back of the arena on the floor, near some dead fish.
How to Solve It and Uncover the Treasure
The clue reads: “I wished to make a contribution to Fafnir’s collection of relics. I arrived to find the door locked and Reavers blocking the way I came. I quickly buried my treasure and hid as fast as I could. If I manage to escape, I’ll return to this spot.”
There are no riddles in that clue, once again, it seems cut and dry. You’ll have to visit Fafnir’s Storeroom which isn’t hard to find. You’ll find this map in the open field area of Fafnir’s Storeroom. Take the left path to some stairs which will lead you to a door guarded by wooden rams on both sides. You’ll recognize it from the map. The map is located near the left Ram.
#7 God of War Treasure Maps: The Boats Captain’s Key
How and Where to Find the Map
In order to find the map, you’ll have to travel to Stone Falls which is east of the Lake of Nine. It can be distinguished by its giant waterfall. To get to the map, you’ll have to jump across the bridge separated by a waterfall at the top of Stone Falls. You’ll find the map in the open area on the other side directly on your left when you step off the bridge.
How to Solve It and Uncover the Treasure
The clue reads: “With the Boat Captain in the belly of the Hydra, the key was mine! I traveled to a new land, but my shipwrecked and sunk along with my precious key. It lies just below the waves, perched on an underwater peak.”
This one isn’t as literal or as obvious as the other clues. One of the only few places that have a shipwreck in God of War’s Midgard is the Isle of Death. That’s where you need to travel to next. You need to climb to the highest point of the Isle of Death to find the old boat. You’ll need to enter the rear of the old shipwreck to find the dig spot.
#8 God of War Treasure Maps: Don’t Blink
How and Where to Find the Map
Fafnir’s Storeroom is full of a lot of great trinkets and items. The ‘Don’t Blink’ treasure map can be found here as well – near the end of the area. The map is located near the middle altar, right next to a dead knight.
How to Solve It and Uncover the Treasure
The Clue Reads: “My journey will be long and I can only carry the essentials. I leave my possessions under the watchful eyes of the face of stone until I return.”
Another very vague clue but easy to figure out if you match it with the picture on the map. The dig spot is located near the entrance of The Mountain, around the foothills. In order to solve this treasure map, you’ll need to have the Bifrost Crystal which will allow you to see the giant face in the mountains.
If you don’t have it, you’ll be confronted by a heavy black smog which will impair your sight and leave you unable to see the face. From the Foothills, climb the stairs and scale up the mountain until you’re directly underneath the face of the mountain. You’ll need to walk about five feet from where you scaled the tall mountain wall to find the treasure’s dig spot.
#9 God of War Treasure Maps: Creation Island
How and Where to Find the Map
The map should be easy to find. You’ll need to visit the main Iron Cove beach. Make sure you go there after the water recedes for a second time. Once you’ve docked your canoe, make your way up the beach until you find the map.
How to Solve It and Uncover the Treasure
The clue reads: “Why waste a life worshiping those who were created by another? I honor Buri, first among Gods and he from whom the Aesir sprang. I left him a tribute on the island that honors him.”
As the clue suggests, you’ll need to head over to Buri’s Storeroom. The dig spot can be found on the very east of the island. You need to go through the left lift gate near the landing spot. Follow the path until you reach the near end of it where you’ll see a water wheel. The treasure will be located near some rocks in that area.
#10 God of War Treasure Maps: Njord’s Oarsman
How and Where to Find the Map
The map is located in the Northri Stronghold which can be reached by navigating the northernmost part of Midgard. You’ll have to use a boat to make through Northi’s Stronghold. You’ll visit this area during the Family Business favor. The map is located in the lower deck of the large ship where you battled The Traveller.
Once you dock your canoe, follow the path until you meet the side of the ship. Break it using an ax and walk into the ship until you see a dead knight. Near the knight, you’ll find the treasure map.
How to Solve It and Uncover the Treasure
The map’s clue reads: “On my last voyage, my ship was ravaged by Thor’s thunder and storms. I had given up hope when the gentile wind of Njord parted the dark clouds and filled my sails. I have hidden my treasure up high where I can forever row with Njord’s Oarsmen.”
The treasure is located near the Council of the Valkyries, in Mason’s channel. You’ll need to dock on the left side near the mystic gateway. Once you’ve docked your canoe, navigate to the back of the area where you’ll find a scalable wall. After climbing the wall, make your way to the left and shimmy across the gap.
After you go across the gap, you’ll see Shindri’s shop. You’ll also see another scalable wall to the opposite of where Shindri sits. Climb this wall, and then mosey on to the right. You’ll go through a cave passage-way until you reach the giant statues of the Oarsman. If you collected the map from Northi’s Stronghold earlier, then you should be able to see the dig spot.
#11 God of War Treasure Maps: Finder’s Fee
How and Where to Find the Map
The map can be found in the Forgotten Caverns, near the east of the area. However, you need to ensure that the waters have receded for a second time. Once you’re sure, head up into the caverns. You’ll make your way through the caverns until you meet a junction at the back. Turn left and you’ll find the treasure map right next to a chest.
How to Solve It and Uncover the Treasure
The map’s clue reads: “I’ve been working for Hraezla Farmadr for a long time, but the pay is always short. With the camp split between Vandrid and his old man, no one will notice me stashing a bit of the earnings on the side. My secret perch is the perfect hiding spot.”
Once again, you’ll need to make your way to the Northri Stronghold which is only accessible after you’ve picked up the ‘Family Business’ side quest. The dig spot is in the northern part of the Northri Stronghold. You’ll need to paddle your way through until you meet the large water wheel. Not far from it is a large tower. There should be a white flag on the dock.
You’ll need to climb up the tower until you reach the highest point climbable. Once you’ve reached the perch, the treasure should be directly in front of you.
#12 God of War Treasure Maps: Island of Light
How and Where to Find the Map
The map can be found in the Mason’s Channel which is found on the very northern beach of the Shores of Nine. The map can be accessed and found once the waters have receded for a second time on the Magic Chisel quest. Dock your boat near the beach on the left side of the statues of the Oarsman.
The map is located on the left side of the beach so you need to ensure that you’re sticking to that side when you search for it. It shouldn’t be hard to find. Alternatively, you can warp to the Stone Falls Mystic Gateway. You’ll find the map directly on your right.
How to Solve It and Uncover the Treasure
The clue reads: “While we hail from Alfheim, the Light Elves make sure to watch over Midgard. I’ve spent most of my life here at this outpost and I will likely die here.”
If the clue is interpreted correctly, it should lead us to the Light Elf Outpost which located in the north-western part of the Lake of Nine. Once you get there, dock your boat, head straight up and cross the light bridge which leads to a Nornir Chest.
Turn right until your back is to the Nornir chest and follow the path. Do not go into the open gate next to the chest. Follow the trail, until you meet a gap that you have to jump over. Jump over the gap, walk up the short platform then turn right. You should see the waterfall far off into the distant. The treasure’s dig spot should also be right in front of you.
Final Words
There you have. These are all 12 of God of War’s Treasure Maps and where to find them. The most comforting thing about looking for them is most of them aren’t hard to find. You can even do it while you’re in the middle of a side quest or task.
God of War is definitely one of the most addictive games to come out lately. With that in mind, you should make sure to take regular breaks while gunning for these treasure maps. If you absolutely can’t afford resting your back and eyes for a couple of hours, at least wear a pair of quality gaming glasses so you don’t ruin your eyes.
Good luck treasure hunting!
