Tech is something that changes and shapes the world around us. However, there are a lot of cool things people don’t know about the world around us in its tech sense that can change how you perceive the world!
Firefox isn’t a fox
Firefox is one of the most popular internet browsers that aren’t chromium-based browsers. However, what most people might think is a fox in its logo. Is actually a red panda!
Fun fact, Red Pandas aren’t pandas! They are just cute furry little adorable fluff balls that live in the Himalayas of all places.
Not All Phones Are Made Equal
Many people put glass protectors on their phones to protect their screens from drops, falls, and cracks. However, some phones are really good at deflecting the damage.
With a new glass technology called “Gorilla Glass 5” phones screens have become super-duper durable! Phones made with Gorilla Glass 5 are very break-resistant, can survive almost all everyday drops you might have, and can also survive being hit with other things.
Most Browsers Are Chrome
Google Chrome is one of the most popular browsers to search the web with. However, many other browsers are also Chrome. Kind of. Many browsers use google’s software to base their browser on which is called “Chromium.”
So, while you play on SlotoCash Casino on the browser of your choice, it might be funny to think about how much tech has come from big companies like Google and others. Sure, people don’t like them, but sometimes they just work.
Not All Keyboards are Equal
Keyboards can be made in many different ways. You may have heard of the coveted “Mechanical Keyboard.” This is because the keyboard is physically made in a way that makes typing on it feel better.
Many cheap keyboards use rubber inserts to push the keys back up, but mechanical keyboards have metal springs and mechanisms inside them that push the keys back into place. This is what gives them their glorious clicky feel that every gamer and typer loves.
Computer Mice
Computer mice in the old days used to have a physical ball underneath them that was used for tracking your movements. Nowadays, we have switched to a more precise system that uses lasers, but back when there weren’t such things, mechanical was the way to go.
Microwaves Don’t Heat Food
Almost everyone knows how to use a microwave, or has used one at some point in their life. However, do you know how one works? Fun fact, it doesn’t heat things as a regular oven does!
How it works, is it sends out a beam of microwaves onto what you want to heat up. This induces an electric field in whatever you are heating. A slight difference in the field across an object causes it to heat it.
This is also why you are going to have a bad time putting foil in the microwave. Foil is very conductive and tends to start fires and such when you place it into a microwave.
So what do I mean that it doesn’t heat your food? Well, it actually heats the water in your food. This heats up the rest of your food in turn and kabam! You have a hot, although perhaps slightly strange tasting, lunch!
The Internet Was For College
In its beginning stages, the internet was meant as a way for colleges to share scholarly info with each other. Eventually, over time, this spread out into the world wide web that we know today.
This is actually why URLs start with the WWW. Originally, the people making the internet thought there were going to be different levels to the internet, and the World Wide Web would just be the public area of the internet.
Micro USB was Awful…
Not too very long ago, people didn’t have the Type C USB cables that we now have today. They used something else called “Micro USB” which was similar to Type C but a bit smaller and had little prongs that stuck out of it.
However, this caused some serious issues. First of all, the jacks would break all of the time! The little prongs could get broken, they could loosen up, or the jack itself on the phone would break.
Thankfully, they much improved this with the Type C cable. Now, we can have the luxury of plugging our phones in and out as much as we like with no consequences! Hopefully, we never have to see those days again I say…
Smoke Detectors use Radiation
Smoke detectors are a super useful thing that I would reckon most people have in their house. They, well, detect smoke! They are able to give you an important heads up if a fire breaks out in a place you are currently in.
However, did you know that a smoke detector uses radiation to detect smoke? It’s true, and someone even tried to make a nuclear reactor out of the little bits they have in them!
Anyways, how they work is by having a little bit of nuclear material in them, and a receiver a bit away from them. The receiver detects the particles going to it from the radioactive material and is all happy when it gets them.
However, if something blocks the particles from getting to the detector, say, smoke or something, then the smoke detector goes nuts and starts beeping. An experience you may have had while cooking.
Clocks Used to Not Work At Sea
Nowadays, we are spoiled with our digital watches and smartphones that can keep the time for us. However, back in the old days, they had to keep time in different ways than we do now.
Many people have heard of sundials, a way to keep track of time using the sun, but another kind of clock used a pendulum to keep track of time. These clocks were very sensitive to movement, and so they couldn’t keep time while at sea on a rocking ship.
This put a wrench in sea travel for a long time, until someone finally invented a sea clock that could work to keep time and allow someone to calculate their longitude.
