Newcomers and WoW veterans alike have been gearing up to tackle Shadowlands’ first raid we know as Castle Nathria. If you are a seasoned World of Warcraft player, you’ll be aware of how exciting (and challenging) raids can be as they become available. Some raids are great at wrapping things up as a kind of season finale, while others kick off a new plotline. Some plotlines date way back to 2002, specifically in Warcraft 3. Be aware that there are spoilers in this article, so if you want to discover the plot for yourself, you might want to stop reading here.
If you’re itching to find out more about the final boss of a raid, whom we know as Sire Denathrius, then you’re in the right place, considering he’s likely to make a future appearance.

What is Castle Nathria?
Castle Nathria is a huge vampire-themed structure that is full to the brim with plot twists and villains awaiting your arrival. As players progress through the Shadowlands campaign, they quickly learn which bosses head up each location with the Primus of Maldraxxus, Bastion’s Archon, the Winter Queen of Ardenweald, and Revendreth’s Sire Denathrius – they all come together to form a group called the Eternal Ones. The group banished the Jailer, Shadownland’s prime baddie, to head up The Maw. If you’re new, The Maw is essentially Warcraft’s version of Hell.
As he makes his return and Sire Denathrius is in competition with his exiled badass, players find out that Sire Denathrius is a traitor after aiding the Revendreth resistance and cornering him in Castle Nathria. After players complete a series of Normal or Heroic difficulties Castle Nathria Raid Runs, Sire Denathrius is condemned to his own mystical realm to be restored to a productive servant of the death society.
This is easy enough for most World of Warcraft players to pick up, but things get a little abstract once players find some clues in the area that might suggest the Dreadlords were, in fact, created by Sire Denathrius.
A blast from the past
Those who remember Warcraft 3 will recall how prominent the Dreadlords were as the defiant demons under the fiery Burning Legion command. The Dreadlords manipulated Prince Arthras to go on his genocide raiding corpses from the dead around the globe, and then made appearances in the MMO on a few occasions to wreak havoc on a religious order as well as instigating an Undercity coup. One of the series’s most famous baddies Sergeras is backed by the Dreadlords, who was locked up tight in the Legion finale.
The spire of Unseen Guests is a Revendreth tower, and there have been occasions where Dreadlords have been referred to as unseen guests in quests previously. Players can read a book in the tower which was written by one of the Unseen Guests we’ve mentioned, and it tells of how they have entered the six cosmic realms, one of which is Shadowlands.
A further teaser for you is that they each have large pecs, massive horns, and hooves. The Dreadlords, compared to Denathrius, are not quite as attractive or as muscular, although their bodies are not too dissimilar.
Taking all of this into account appears as though Sire Denathrius has been living it up in a crazy way, which includes instigating the events in Warcraft 3 and multiple other Wow expansions. Denathrius is most definitely still on the scene, we’ve just placed him on the sidelines for now.
Denathrius also ties in with another blast from the past; Garrosh Hellscream. Warlords of Draenor saw him die, meaning he moved on to the afterlife, a.k.a Revendreth, where his soul was tortured for eternity until a time came where he repented for his genocides.
