Realm Royale vs. Fortnite

Over the past few years, the Battle Royale genre has taken the world by storm thanks to the massive success of titles such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and Fortnite. In more recent years, developers have been attempting to follow in the footsteps of Brendan Greene and Epic Games by creating their own version of a Battle Royale game.

As the genre continues to gain attention, developers are forced to think outside the box in order to stand out from the crowd—which is exactly what Hi-Rez Studios has done.

Back in the summer of 2018, Hi-Rez Studios released Real Royale: a fantasy-themed Battle Royale that features unique gameplay and class-specific abilities. Naturally—as with every other Battle Royale title—Realm Royale has been compared to some of the best Battle Royale games on the market.

But how does it compare with the games that popularized the genre? Or, more specifically, how does it compare to Fortnite? In today’s Realm Royale vs. Fortnite comparison guide, we will be discussing exactly that.

Available Platforms

After the massive success of Fortnite on PC and console, Epic Games made the smart decision to release the game on mobile. By making Fortnite available on iOS and Android devices, players could finally enjoy the full game on-the-go. What’s more, Fortnite mobile supports cross-platform play so that you can team up with your pals who prefer to play on other platforms.

With that being said, at this very moment, Realm Royale isn’t available on mobile devices. So, what platforms are the two games actually available on?

Realm Royale Platforms:

  • PC (Windows)
  • PlayStation 4
  • Xbox One
  • Nintendo Switch

Fortnite Platforms:

  • PC (Windows + Mac)
  • PlayStation 4
  • Xbox One
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Mobile (iOS + Android)

Game Modes

One of the best things about Battle Royale games is that they offer a selection of game modes that you can play either alone, with internet strangers or even with your friends.

fortnite game mode selection

As with every other Battle Royale, the three basic game modes in Realm Royale and Fortnite are identical: Solo (you vs 99 other players), Duos (you and another player vs other duo teams) and Squads (up to 4 players vs other squads).

With that said, unlike Realm Royale, Fortnite features a range of limited-time modes (LTMs) for you to try out alongside the regular game modes. This is where Fortnite stands out compared to Realm Royale and even titles such as Apex Legends that only feature a few basic game modes.

Realm Royale Classes

Unlike Fortnite, Realm Royale is a class-based Battle Royale set in a fantasy-themed world. In the world of gaming, class-based systems certainly aren’t new, but how does it work in this Battle Royale? Right before you jump into a game, you’ll have the option to choose between five different classes: Warrior, Engineer, Assassin, Mage, and Hunter.

Each and every class in Realm Royale has its own advantages, different abilities, and weapons that can be found around the map. Depending on your class, the abilities and weapons found across the world will support your class as you play. For instance, a Hunter will often benefit from a bow while a Warrior may use an ax to gain an advantage in-game.

Gameplay: The Basics

As to be expected, the basics of both Realm Royale and Fortnite are textbook Battle Royale: 100 players from across the globe jump from a vehicle that flies across an ever-shrinking play area. Before the player jumps, they have the option of choosing where they wish to land.

fortnite hot air balloon

Regardless of where the players land—whether that’s in a concrete jungle or on a sandy desert—they will need to find weapons, health potions and other useful items before anyone on the opposing team grabs them first. Once the player has found all of the items they need to survive, it’s time to start gunning down enemies for that winning title.

Player Elimination and Respawning

On the topic of gunning down enemies, if you’re gunned down by an enemy in Fortnite, your teammates can respawn you so long as you’re in a team-based game mode. If they don’t manage to respawn you in time and you end up getting eliminated, you will drop a Reboot Card that will remain on the ground for 90 seconds.

In this time, a teammate can grab it and take it to a Reboot van in order to respawn you. These vans are located all over the map so that you have a chance to respawn before the end of the game.

On the other hand, if you’re downed in Realm Royale, you will turn into a chicken with 700 health and the ability to deal 75 damage using the melee peck attack. Yes, you read that correctly: a chicken.

If you manage to survive for 20 seconds as a chicken, you will automatically revive. This feature makes playing Realm Royale an absolutely hilarious experience that makes losing hit points feel less frustrating.

The Ever-Shrinking Play Area: Storm Eye and Fog

Over time, a powerful barrier (Fog in Realm Royale and Storm eye in Fortnite) will force the play area to continuously shrink, making hiding from enemies much more challenging. If you accidentally get caught in the Fog or Storm, you will deal damage over a period of time.

As you continue to survive through each stage of the game, the damage you take while the barrier shrinks will increase significantly. As the damage taken increases, the shrinking time will also decrease, forcing you to think on your feet.

Unless you escape, you will eventually take an L and die. Albeit, if you’re lucky enough to die close to the safe zone, your teammates will be able to revive you before the game ends. This makes playing both Realm Royale and Fortnite more exciting as the game progresses on.

In regards to the damage dealt, compared to Fortnite, the Fog in Realm Royale deals 18 damage per tick which increases as you play. In contrast, the Storm in Fortnite deals with only 10 damage per second (DPS) in the final stages.

The Arena

If you take a quick glance at the maps featured in Realm Royale and Fortnite, you’ll notice that the pair are actually very similar. The main thing you’ll immediately notice is that the range of locations available is almost identical: desert, jungle, and snow. These areas allow for visual variety and make playing the games much more enjoyable.

With that being said, one thing that makes Realm Royale stand out compared to Fortnite is the range of fantasy-themed landmarks just waiting to be explored. Even so, Epic Games often changes up the map featured in Fortnite by reworking and adding features to certain areas.

Chests and Loot

Once you land in the arena, your first priority is to find weapons and other loot located in chests that are spread randomly across the map. In Realm Royale, there are three different types of chests: Basic Chests (weapons, abilities, and runes), Potion Chests (health and armor potions) and Gold Chests (Epic and Legendary loot). To make them stand out, Gold Chests feature an orange beam that shoots to the sky.

You will also see an icon displayed on your minimap so that you can find some legendary weapons with ease. You will also be able to find Epic and Legendary loot in Loot Goblins that randomly spawn across the map. In addition to this, you will also be able to find loot on the ground if a player has dropped it after looting a chest.

Compared to Realm Royale, floor loot is actually very common in Fortnite. Furthermore, considering items are constantly being added to the game, the range of loot found in Fortnite is absolutely insane. Currently, you can find weapons, ammo, explosives, healing items, utility items, and traps on the ground and in chests across the battlefield. As to be expected, ammunition can also be found in ammo boxes around the world.

In addition to chests, Fortnite features a Supply Drop that randomly drops from the sky. These can contain anything from a few potions to very rare weapons used to destroy enemies. In addition to these drops, three Supply Llamas will spawn per match which contains materials, consumables, and ammo.

Weapons

As to be expected from a Battle Royale, Realm Royale and Fortnite feature a range of weapon types (pistols, shotguns, rifles) that fall under different weapon classes. In Realm Royale, the General Weapon classes include Common (white), Rare (green), Epic (purple) and Legendary orange).

Unlike Common weapons, Rare, Epic and Legendary weapons can only be found in Gold Chests or Loot Goblins. On the contrary, Class Weapons (Epic and Legendary) can be found anywhere on the battlefield. Additionally, players in Realm Royale can craft class-specific legendary weapons with special effects.

In Fortnite, loot and weapons also come under five different tiers with colors that determine their rarity: Common (gray), Uncommon (green), Rare (blue), Epic (purple) and Legendary (gold). Much like other Battle Royale titles, each weapon features a different fire rate, magazine size, reload speed, DPS, headshot damage and normal damage.

Now, you won’t be able to level up these weapons since the power of every weapon will depend on its rarity (class)—so you’ll have to choose your weapons wisely.

Crafting and Building System

As you may be aware, Fortnite features a unique building mechanic that certainly takes some getting used to. Despite this fact, it’s a skill that you must acquire if you want to survive. Once you have found some weapons and loot to keep you alive, it’s time to start destroying objects in order to obtain materials. These materials include wood, stone, and metal that have a different starting health—the metal being the strongest.

Such materials can be used to craft walls, floors, stairs, and roofs. At first, you definitely won’t be able to make a protective fort within a matter of seconds. So we suggest learning how to quickly place walls in order to protect yourself from enemy bullets.

If this sounds extremely intimidating, then you may prefer Realm Royale. Rather than a building mechanic, Realm Royale features a unique crafting system in which you can craft equipment. By using Forges, you can create legendary weapons, armor and even health potions used to survive. But before you start using a Forge, you will need to gather the correct materials to start using one.

Sounds very similar to crafting potions in Minecraft, doesn’t it? These materials include shards, orange crystals (collected from objects and enemy bodies) and chicken trophies (a reward that can be collected after eliminating an enemy). Each item you craft in a Forge requires a certain number of shards while crafting time varies from 30- to 60-seconds.

Vehicles

Since the arena in both Realm Royale and Fortnite is huge, you’re probably going to need another mode of transport in order to get around. In Realm Royale, other than a motorcycle, a horse is your main form of transport. The great thing is, you can summon your horse at any point in the game by holding down the Z key on PC in an open area. This makes navigating the world a much faster process, which is especially handy when the play area begins to shrink.

Fortnite, on the other hand, features a range of different vehicles that can be found across the map. Ever since it’s release, more and more vehicles have been added to the game including Stormwing planes, Motorboats, and Quadcrashers. This makes getting across the variety of locations a breeze.

Battle Passes and Cosmetic Items

As Realm Royale and Fortnite are both free-to-play Battle Royale games, the pair feature Battle Passes and cosmetic items that can be bought using real cash. As a matter of fact, free-to-play games generate almost all of their revenue from in-game purchases. In Fortnite, you can buy items such as Emotes, Banners, Skins, Gliders, Weapons and even Bundles using the in-game currency, V-Bucks.

To change things up, the Fortnite shop rotates on a regular basis so that you can find and purchase some fun new items that you may not be able to buy in the future.

The in-game shop in Realm Royale also features a range of cosmetic items such as Skins, Avatars, Emotes and Skydive Effects. Now, these items won’t affect gameplay, but you have to admit that sometimes, you just have to treat yourself to some swanky new virtual outfits. In regards to the Battle Passes, the one featured in Realm Royale is very similar to the one in Fortnite.

These passes enable members to earn XP by playing matches in order to level up. By leveling up, you will unlock some new cosmetic items for you to show off to your friends. As to be expected, you will have to pay for these using in-game currency. At this very moment, Realm Royale costs 900 crowns, while Fortnite costs 950 V-Bucks.

Graphics

If you told me to describe both Realm Royale and Fortnite in just one word, it would have to be “cartoony”.

fortnite female character holding an axe

This is due to the fact that they both feature playful locations, cartoon characters, and vibrant colors—features that make playing these games a very pleasant experience. In fact, aside from PUBG, most Battle Royale titles feature a cartoony visual style.

If you’re looking for something a little more realistic, we highly recommend PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 | Blackout.
